What is Wellness?

Wellness is at the heart of what we do at JCC of Youngstown. What does wellness mean? It is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes, so that instead of just surviving, you're thriving.

JCC of Youngstown is focused on the well being of the whole person, and that directly makes an impact on the lives of our members. In addition to the many opportunities for members to participate in fitness activities, we offer classes in fine arts: music, theatre, visual arts, and dance; we host presentations and lectures on nutrition, social issues, and healthcare; and we organize opportunities for social interaction like day trips and community gatherings.

Research has called wellness an upward spiral - a loop where a wellness behavior, like exercising, leads to positive emotions and those emotions create a desire to continue.

The Importance of Wellness Programs for Kids

Wellness is especially important for young kids. Kids that are focused on wellness are more likely to excel, and it helps them cope with the many challenges that come up in the teenage years. Teenagers with strong mental wellbeing are better equipped to manage their emotions, have positive relationships, do well in school, and look forward to the future.

How can you achieve wellness at JCC?

  1. Try a group exercise class - Did you know JCC offers over 30 group exercise classes each week, including Silver Sneakers approved programs, and free classes for adults with Parkinson’s
  2. Attend a free lecture program. See our summer programs at jccyoungstown.org/levy
  3. Try a fine arts class. Visit the visual arts studio during open studio hours, try an adult dance class, or visit the Thomases Endowment Art Gallery.

Wellness is not going to happen all at once - each small step keeps you on the right path to achieve positive outcomes!

Member Success Story Jason Ellis

Jason lost 160 pounds in 15 months coming to the JCC. After a scary visit to the doctor with medical issues from pre-diabetes Jason made the choice that day to change his lifestyle.

He began with a change in nutrition. Swapping out breakfast and dinner with meal replacement protein shakes. Eating a lunch that usually ranged from 700 to 900 calories. Eating lunch instead of dinner allowed him to burn off those calories during the rest of the day. Especially on days when he would do evening workouts.

Once he had his diet under control, he started with cardio exercises exclusively for the 1st 8 months.  When he started seeing changes, Jason incorporated weight training for toning. By making these wellness choices Jason enjoys being more active with his family, and his energy level is through the roof.  Most importantly, he feels much better and continues to work out at the JCC five days a week.  Also participating in evening classes. He feels as if those classes give him a much needed boost, and change up that his body needs to continue to overcome challenges and take his endurance to new levels.
