Women in History: Louise Nevelson
SUPPORT A NON-PROFIT! (Adult)
Women in History is a non-profit that shares the untold stories of almost 100 notable women. One of the most dynamic and dramatic is Louise Berliawsky Nevelson, the Empress of Modern Art.
Louise Berliawsky Nevelson escaped the pogroms of Kiev in 1905 and emigrated to a small town in upstate New York. Although her family struggled with poverty and antisemitism, from the time she was a young child, Louise knew she wanted to be a sculptor. “Most artists create out of despair,” she mused. Possessed with strength, perseverance and a unique gift of finding new ways to express her artistic vision, Nevelson emerged as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century.
