Join us every month for our cooking demonstrations, where you get to learn about different health benefits of various foods, learn about their uses, and how to prepare them in this hands-on class!
Community Health Education programming is supported by the Mercy Health Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and presented by Jessica Romeo, MHHS, RDN, LD, Community Health Educator.

Soup (Ages 18+) (Adult)
Celebrate National Soup Month with us this January! Soups warm us on cold days, but are also a great way to get vital nutrients we need for our wellness. Join Mercy Health and warm up with piping hot bowls of comfort and learn the basics of making delicious soups at home. Participants will enjoy a bowl of homemade soup while learning the health benefits of regular homemade soup enjoyment and a demonstration of some must-know soup making techniques. Recipes and resources will be provided.

Pulses (Ages 18+) (Adult)
February 10 is World Pulse Day, a good reason to consider the health and nutritional benefits of pulses like lentils, chickpeas, and beans. These edible, dried seeds of legumes are a sustainable source of protein and fiber and are essential to a healthy diet. Join Mercy Health at the JCC to sample a delightful pulse-forward dish and learn easy ways to eat pulses more often.

Cooking Demonstration: Peanut (Ages 18+) (Adult)
March is National Peanut Month! This legume is a powerhouse of nutrition and flavor that people have been eating since 1400 B.C. These tasty “nuts” add flavor and texture to almost any dish. Join Mercy Health and sample a peanut forward recipe demonstration and learn the nutrition benefits of including them in your meal plans.

Cooking Demonstration: Garlic (Ages 18+) (Adult)
April is National Garlic Month! Garlic transcends cultures. It can be found in Asian, American, African, and European cuisines. Garlic was known to early humans to be a healthy and versatile crop with medicinal properties. Commonly referred to as an herb or spice, garlic is botanically a vegetable in the onion family. Packed with vitamins and nutrients, garlic provides lots of flavor for a few calories and provides added health benefits. Join Mercy Health for a garlic-forward cooking class and learn a few ways to include this special ingredient to your favorite dishes.

Lunch & Learn - Jewish Heritage Month  (Adult)
All about the knish! Knishes are a popular Jewish American savory pastry filled with potato, caramelized onion, or kash (buckwheat groats). For this special Lunch & Learn, the class will enjoy a homemade knish and green salad while enjoying a demonstration on making knish dough. The recipe will be provided.
